Managing Gas Prices Hypermiling is the increasingly popular solution.
Gas prices are increasing regularly and as they increase they cause a lot of stress on your wallet; however there is also another positive increase in the numbers of a group of people who call themselves hypermilers. As you can very well guess hypermilers are called as such for they do something called hypermiling or extracting every mile of mileage they can from a gallon of gas. Using multiple techniques which they claim decrease fuel consumption drastically; hypermilers literally go out of their way to extract every mile they can per gallon of fuel.
Hypermilers use techniques like maintaining a constant speed, braking less often, choosing routes with a lesser number of turns, timing traffic signals to avoid starting and stopping too many times and always driving through level ground in order to maximise their mileage. They also concentrate on maintaining a constant motion for stopping and starting uses up a lot of fuel. Hypermilers also park near slopes so that they can simply roll away in gear and not start their engines. Hypermilers used to be laughed at, as being over obsessive, but no longer does that hold true. With new onboard computers they can now prove to the world that they actually get up to 90 miles per gallon!
Hypermilers often customize their cars to great detail, disabling air conditioning systems by decoupling them from the engine altogether and using aerodynamic hub caps to modulate the flow of air at the sides of the car to reduce drag induced when air flows against the sides of a car, for increased mileage. Using an internal radio antenna helps a lot to decrease the drag or the air resistance a car has to battle against while moving forward. Similarly keeping your windows rolled up helps too, as the wind which strikes back at the car has a greater surface area to push back at the car with. These little tricks along with advanced computerized gauges which constantly monitor engine performance, mileage and the fuel consumed over time help the hypermiler to fulfill his or her objective of squeezing out the maximum mileage possible from a car.
Hypermiling can be practiced by almost every one with a normal car and can offer greater mileage results than a hybrid. Since oil prices are on the rise, the easiest thing to do is to do to ease the burden is to join the ranks of the hypermilers, not only will your wallet be fatter, the earth will be greener too.
